Thank you, Coach Duell, for being a great and enthusiastic high school football coach and Phys Ed teacher at Greene Central School and for leading us to two hard-won, and long overdue, winning seasons in the late seventies as my coach. Your athletic achievements, especially in football at Penn State, were an inspiration to all of us on the team and, I am sure, to many others. You led a good life. Rest in peace.

What can I say about growing up with such a shy but dynamic brother? He was a homebody that loved the family get togethers, the pool parties, and the neighborhood picnics in our backyard.
When it came to sports, I remember the hours he practiced. He would run along the hillside getting ready for football, shoot basket after basket, and practice triple jump in a sand pit our Dad built for him. It wasn’t enough to do good he wanted to do his best.
After he married Shelley he managed to find his way back to Flemingville on a regular basis – never forgetting where he started. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy.
We may have lived in different states, but we shared many wonderful memories. We never lost the connection we had growing up. I will miss him more than I can express. - Darlene Youngdahl

Q: What will you never forget about Gary?
A: Shelley is my fathers first cousin. I grew up across the street from the Deuel’s and I always felt like Gary was my Uncle. He always supported and encouraged me in my Chenango Forks football pursuits. When I had childhood cancer, Gary was the first to scoop me up, and bring me to a Syracuse game to meet the head coach and players. Gary used to find me after every CF vs CV game and tell me how proud he was of my play. He was a mentor, a coach and an example of how to be a good person. I will always appreciate the memories and time he gave me. Shelley, Kim, Jon and Nick we are thinking of you all.

Q: What was one of your favorite qualities of Gary?
A: I remember Gary most from our college days at Cortland State. I shared a rental house with Shelley and some other college friends.
Shelley and Gary were dating and he would come visit frequently…I remember his sweet smile…his calm and quiet manner…he was so easy to like..
I remember years later his love of antiques and visiting he and Shelley at the big annual antique show near Syracuse and later visits to their home in Binghamton.
He was a gentle soul and a good husband and father.

Anytime someone talks about OFA football, Gary's name will always come up. He was OFA football ! Even if you didn't follow OFA football, everyone had heard the name Gary Deuel. People who know Gary, know that he was alot more than the game of football. Besides being an outstanding athlete, he was the most humble and selfless person I've had the honor to know and call my friend. Besides people respecting Gary for his football exploits, he was respected for the outstanding human that he was. May you rest in peace Deulie ......

I'm so fortunate to have had such a caring and supportive father who loved his family unconditionally. He taught me so many things, financial independence, toughness when it came to sports and making calculated life decisions. He always supported me in following my dreams and whatever crazy thing I chose to pursue, even when that recently has involved chasing bears around for a living. He understood my attitude of doing what you love and having passion for it because he loved the game of football, not just because of the game itself, but more because of the people and relationships that came from it. He was not just my Dad, but a best friend and I will miss him for the rest of my life.

Tres Desperados captured at the Truman Farm, circa 1955. "Cowboys & Indians" was an ongoing game that we all took seriously, obviously. The Deuels were first in Flemingville to have a B&W television. We gathered in front of it every Saturday morning & salute at attention when our favorite "The Rebel" came on. I feel so grateful for the many rich memories with Gary, on into adulthood, and for my second family, the Deuels. Never the like again.

I will never forget Gary taking me and my sister antique shopping on our last trip to Hatch Lake in 2018. He showed us around all the best shops and the people at each store knew him well. That was so nice of him to do and we had so much fun with him that day. My husband enjoyed talking football with him at the cabin and we all had such a good time sharing memories and laughing. It was a time together I will cherish forever. Gary was a kind, humble man who I will always love and admire. He will be greatly missed. My heart is with his family now and always.
