After knowing John for years through the Southern Tier Bicycle Club, I was fortunate enough to go on a holiday weekend trip to Chatham, Mass. organized and led by John Ruth. John knew I had never been there before, like some of the other cyclists. He took me under his wing, walking the beach, showing me the sites, telling history and stories that he knew so well. The smile on his face as the group sampled the food and bicycle toured around Cape Cod, showed his true love of the Chatham area and the friends he loved to share it with. Karen K.

I met John in Fall of 1969 when we became roomies in a Syracuse University dorm. He weighed 120 lbs and I was about 135. Those were the days. Although we got heavier through the years, we remained steadfast friends. I won’t say much because words cannot do justice to a life well lived. He expressed gentleness and kindness in his interactions with others. I never heard him say a mean thing about anybody. A lovely man whose absence will not disappear.

John lived a good life devoting his time and energy to helping others. He took pride in the work that he did, whether major renovations or minor repairs. He never advertised, but he had a steady stream of clients year after year who knew that they could rely and depend on him to do the job well. He often would be called to do a job that no one else would be bothered to do - like reset a rural-route mailbox post that got knocked over or to scrape and paint a wrought iron patio set. He found it hard to turn down these jobs simply because he liked being helpful.
His work was physically demanding, but when he had the time he would ride his bike or cross-country ski with Southern Tier Bicycle Club, swim laps at Recreation Park, or play billiards or a round of golf with family and friends. He was unusually good at all his athletic endeavors.
John was an accomplished musician who played his trumpet in the Binghamton Community Orchestra and the Maine Community Band - that played in the parks during the summer. He was a member of the BU Pep Band and several ensemble groups that played for Sunday services at many churches in the community. He would call me on my birthday or at Christmastime to play a song for me on his trumpet.
John was a good cook, always creative in everything he made. A master at the grill - his chicken and pork chops were always delicious. He enjoyed cooking for family and friends to celebrate his birthday.
One year John tried his hand at making maple syrup. He tapped the maple tree next to his deck and after a long process he presented me with a small flask of syrup.
I was the recipient of many of his thoughtful gestures throughout our friendship - whether he was bringing me dinner when I was on the mend from surgery or sending a jar of Little Venice spaghetti sauce to me in Seattle because I told him how I missed being able to eat at Little Venice.
He was a sweet, thoughtful man who devoted his time and energy in helping to make others happy. He will forever be remembered by all the people whose lives he touched.

John Ruth was indeed a man of many talents, just as he was a man of many interests. He tended towards being quiet and contemplative - perhaps the legacy of his early studies in Philosophy at Syracuse. What John absorbed from those studies , making him a representative of the “still waters run deep” club, was thankfully balanced by a wry sense of humor which he kept barely below the surface, ready to puncture pomposity as needed. I was always impressed by John’s carpentry and repair skills, no less than by his creative skills as a problem-solver, silently staring down a work area before sketching his solution to the resistance of wood, water and electricity. I think the bike rides, sports and trumpet playing were, again, a balance for John, a place for him to purge internal stress with a glorious release of physical energy. He brought to every activity a delight in meeting the challenge. What a splendid , irrepressible man! No wonder we knew him as ‘John Truth’! - Timothy Perry and Ute St. Clair

Pool… with a Capital ‘P’
John taught me most of what I know about shooting pool. We played together at 1st Ward Senior Center
He was good - one of the top players in the center league
The day I shot this photo John, Jack Yevchak, and I just happened to arrive at the same time, each intending to practice our pool shots solo
Instead, we spent the afternoon shooting pool together ☺️

For over 20 years, John hosted a small group of STBC bike club cycling friends on Memorial Day week in Chatham Cape Cod at a friend’s historic home - the 1834 Leander Gould House
John would do repair work a few of the days, then we would cycle the Cape Cod Rail Trail and north to Provincetown together, take hikes to the beach at night, and relax
Here’s some photos from over the years, including one of the house.
These were the best of times…
And, here’s another John story. I haven’t decided what this one speaks to… maybe John’s ‘good enough!’ attitude and sense of humor
One of the years, John did not get around to doing his laundry and packing before heading to the Cape.
So…he grabbed his dirty laundry basket, threw it into his car, and headed to the Cape
When he arrived, he washed the laundry at started wearing it.
At the end of the week, he shared this story with us, and was rather humored that the only clothing he was lacking were warm socks - it had been hot the week before in Binghamton.
So off he went to buy a pair of warm socks at Chatham

These photos speak to John’s quiet helpfulness - he was always there when needed
A few years ago our friend Ira Glickstein took my trike recumbent bike out for a test ride in Chatham Cape Cod, where we have all vacationed together for 20+ years
Ira was no longer able to ride a two wheel bike due to some balance challenges, and was thinking about a 3 wheel trike
John was right there by his side during the test ride…
Ira now has his own trike, and has continued to enjoy cycling for a good 5 years

John will be deeply missed by those who were fortunate enough to know him. He was thoughtful, kind, and resourceful. For many years we carpooled together to "band practice," i.e. BCO rehearsals. He had an amazing skill in backing up into small parking spaces, smoothly and quickly. His vehicle had a bumper sticker "Live simply so that others may simply live."
Our family shares this loss with Eleanor, Tom, and John's entire family.
Most of all, I will remember him as someone who made our community and our world a better place.

John cycled for decades with Southern Tier Bicycle Club…
He created our club logo, and even had it tattooed on his ankle

I knew John as a member of the Maine Community Band, and also through some STBC (bike club) events. John was always very pleasant and enjoyable to be with. I often discussed my various DIY household repair adventures with John, and received lots of good advice from his knowledge and experience.
John was a good man, and he will be missed.

There isn't a nook or cranny inside or outside our house John Ruth didn't work on and improve, in his quiet, efficient and skilled manner. Invariably, we would hire him for some job, and he would see other things that needed attention and he would just go ahead and do them. His last work for us was to install a Little Neighborhood Free LIbrary in our front yard. And he never charged enough for his much-appreciated work. We also knew him as a fellow musician and appreciated his enthusiasm for ensemble playing. We will miss him greatly. Lee and Julian/Shepherd
