Obituary of Joseph M. Medwetz

Joseph Michael Medwetz, 63, of Endicott, passed away on Tuesday, June 15, 2004 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family and loved ones. Predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Mary Medwetz; and his mother-in-law, Cecilia Bergin. He is survived by Barbara Medwetz, his loving and devoted wife of 34 years; and his adoring children: son, Joseph J. Medwetz, Scottsdale, Ariz.; daughter, Christine Kurtz and husband Robert, Center Valley, Pa.; and daughter, Susan Locke and husband Robert, Binghamton. He is also survived by his sister, Katherine Miller and husband Gary, San Marcos, Calif.; brother, Charles Medwetz and wife Valerie, White Haven, Pa.; brother, James Medwetz, White Haven, Pa.; his father-in-law, Regis M. Bergin, Binghamton; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Marlene and David West, Kathleen Bergin, Christine and William Curley, William and Roberta Bergin, Elizabeth and Robert Connerton, all of Binghamton, John and Elizabeth Bergin, Schenectady, N.Y., and Mary Lou and Ronald Law, Drums, Pa.; numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Medwetz attended the University of Scranton and the University of Detroit, graduating with a Bachelor's of Science in Electrical Engineering. He then earned a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from Drexel University and served as an Officer in the United States Army from 1966 to 1970. In 2003, Mr. Medwetz retired from IBM/Lockheed Martin after 37 years as an expert in the fields of SONAR and Systems Integration and Testing. Those closest to him, however, know that it was as a husband and father that his purpose in life was truly realized. He was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, Endicott, having previously served on the parish finance committee. Mr. Medwetz was an accomplished pianist who shared his love of music with family and friends, residents of the Hilltop Nursing Home, and attendees of many parties and weddings. He was also an avid tennis player, known to be out on the court as often as four times a week. His ever-present sense of humor brightened the lives of everyone with whom he came in contact. A Funeral Mass will be offered at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, Endicott, Saturday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the J.A.
