Michael

Martin McCarthy, 61, of St. Joseph, Pa., died Thursday, July 25, 2002 at his

home. He was born June 17, 1941 in Bridgeport, Conn. He was predeceased in

death by his father, Michael L. McCarthy in 1993. He is survived by his wife,

Gwen; son, Michael (a jin), Seoul, Korea; daughters, Kathleen, Troy, Pa. and

Beth, Philadelphia, Pa.; his mother, Madeline; brother, Duane (Dorothy), all of

Houston, Tex. Mike attended Fort Hayes University (Kans.) on a football

scholarship, where he majored in elementary education. He also enlisted in the

US Army. Following graduation, he taught school at Brookside Elementary and

Vestal High School where ha coached football. In 1976, he established the

Pleasent Valley General Store, LeRaysville, Pa. Mike took special interest in

catering to the surrounding Amish Community in which he had many close friends.

Later, Mike founded Silver Springs Mountain Water, Friendsville, Pa., which he

operated until it's sale in 1998. After retirement, Mike devoted his life to

serving the needs of others. He was an active volunteer for many charitable

causes including Lourdes Hospice, Special Olympics, Food Bank and Toy's For

Tot's. Mike was a faithful life long member of the Roman Catholic Church and

currently was attending St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Binghamton. In his

spare time, Mike enjoyed books, music, antiques, animals, nature and the

company of friends and family. He was especially proud of his Irish/Lithuanian

Heritage. Mike touched the lives of many while in our presence. He could be

counted on for his ready smile, hearty laugh, generosity and unselfish

willingness to help the less fortunate. He will be dearly missed. Heaven has

indeed gained a precious new member. A Memorial Mass will be offered at the St.

Mary of the Assumption Church, Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. Arrangements are by the

J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main St., Binghamton.
