Obituary of Giovanna “Gina” Quagliata

Giovanna (Gina) Quagliata, 88, of Binghamton, died of this earth on October 2, 2002 to be welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven for eternal rest and peace. She was predeceased by her parents, Agatino and Caterina Spadaro; her sister, Maria; brothers, Domenico, Vincenzo and Carmelo; her husband, Carmelo; her beloved first son, Tino; brother-in-law, Giuseppi and his wife Francesca. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John and Alison; sons, Charles and Joseph; nephew, Anthony; and six grandchildren, and two great-grandsons, Angela, Carmen (wife Palma, and sons, Tino and Gabriel), Gina, Michael, Cristina and Benjamin; also many nieces, nephews and cousins residing in Italy; and many dear friends in the Binghamton area. Giovanna emigrated from her home in Locadi, Sicily in 1935. She and her husband were successful small business people primarily with the Cozy Corner Restaurant and later with the Quality Market, both on Binghamton's South Side. She was known to generations of customers and vendors for her generosity, humor and loving spirit. She retired in 1983. Giovanna was a devout Parishoner of St. John the Evangelist Church, Binghamton and a member of the Rosary Confraternity, Legion of Mary and Catholic Daughters of America, Court Binghamton #237. Her life was lived with joy and dignity and dedicated to a firm belief in God and the supremacy of family bonds. A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. John the Evangelist Church, Vestal Ave., Binghamton, on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main St., Binghamton, Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. For those who wish to honor her memory, the family suggests that act of charity be performed in celebration of Giovanna's life.
