Obituary of Charles L. Shute

Dr. Charles L. Shute, 81, of Binghamton, died Sunday evening, December 23, 2001 at the James G. Johnston Memorial Nursing Home. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles "Roy" and Mary Shute; a brother, James Shute; and an infant daughter. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gladys Shute; his children, Carol and Larry Mazar, Binghamton, Dr. Richard and Teresa Shute, Morton Hill, Ill., Mary Kay Shute, Birmingham, Ala., Larry and Diane Shute, Downingtown, Pa.; nine grandchildren, Andy and Rick Micha, Michael and Alissa Mazar, Robin and Phil Meaker, Robert, Ryan, Andrew and Jennifer Shute, Charlie and Katie Shute; a great-granddaughter, Madeline Meaker. Dr. Shute was a founding member of St. Vincent de Paul Church, Vestal, past President of the Parish Council and member of the Men's Club. He was a graduate of St. Patrick's Academy, Niagara University and Georgetown Medical School. Dr. Shute served his internship at Binghamton City Hospital and practiced General Surgery in Binghamton with the late Dr. Ben Matthews and was later joined in practice by Dr. William Slimbaugh. He was a member of the Broome County Medical Society and the American Medical Association. He was Chief of Surgery at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, member and past President of the Binghamton Club and a Navy Veteran of WWII. A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Vincent de Paul Church, Clubhouse Rd., Vestal, Thursday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the J. A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main St., Binghamton, Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Dr. Shute may be made to Hilltop Retirement Community, 286 Deyo Hill Rd., Johnson City, N.Y. 13790, or to St. Vincent de Paul Church, 165 Clifton Blvd., Vestal, N.Y. 13850.
