Obituary of Thomas H. Quain
Please share a memory of Thomas to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Thomas H. Quain of Johnson City NY, passed away peacefully on Wednesday December 11, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was predeceased by Joyce, his beloved and cherished wife of 63 years. Since Mom's death in 2021, Dad has been a shell of himself, so while we are saddened by our loss, we are comforted by the thought that they are reunited and that he is once again whole.
Dad was predeceased by many including his daughter-in-law, Antoinette. He is survived by his children Thomas M. Quain, Kevin Quain (Stephanie), Susan Quain, Timothy Quain, John Quain, Kathleen McCormack (Joe) & Colleen Quain, and his 10 grandchildren, Thomas, Gabriella, Michael, Benjamin, Abigail, Danielle, Ashley, Jack, Ryan & Anna and many great-grandchildren Kendrick, Jayden, Aubrielle, Raya, Anthony, Allison, Natalie, Stella, Madilyn & Brooklynn. He is also survived by sister-in-law Pat Lester & brother-in-law Ed Smith.
Dad was born on October 6, 1934, in Montrose PA, and graduated from JCHS in 1953. He married Joyce (Lester) in 1957 and shortly thereafter moved to West Point NY to serve as a medic in the US Army. Following that, they came back to Johnson City where Dad began his 40+ year career as a kitchen designer, working for Valley Crafts Kitchens, Pat Cummiskey & Sons and several other well-known home renovation businesses in the area.
Dad was an avid fan of the NY Yankees and a long-suffering fan of the NY Giants. He was an accomplished bowler with multiple 300 games and a 7-10 split on his resumé. He was a fan of 'traditional' country singers like George Jones and Merle Haggard. Dad loved murder mysteries, anything from an Agatha Christie who-done-it to a Perry Mason thriller. He enjoyed a good martini and a bad cigar. His breakfasts were an event where he was especially known for his silver-dollar pancakes. "If ya asked for 20 pancakes, ya got 20 pancakes!" His greatest pleasure, especially in his final years, were the visits from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They always lifted their grandpa's spirits and were an endless source of pride and joy.
Dad worked hard to support us in the most important ways. He was never motivated by money or material possessions; those things were unimportant to him. Dad had Mom... and his family. He was much loved and will be greatly missed.
