Obituary of Richard K. Matthews

Please share a memory of Richard to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Richard K. "Smitty" Matthews, 66, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, November 15, surrounded by his loving family. He is predeceased by his parents, Robert S. and Kathleen H. Matthews, and four of his brothers, Robert S. Matthews, Jr., James H. Matthews, Michael P. Matthews and Anthony C. Matthews. He is survived by his siblings, Joseph D. (Christina) Matthews, Nora M. (Robert) Flannery, Dennis J. (Hope) Matthews, Martin J. (Joann) Matthews, Tricia M. (Jeff Liccion) Matthews, and sister-in-law, Virginia Matthews. He is also survived by eleven nieces and nephews, eleven great nieces and nephews, and his Haley cousins who he adored. Richard left this life as he lived it, peacefully and privately. He loved spending time outdoors, especially at his favorite spot, Skaneateles Lake, where you could find him slowly rowing his boat, looking to catch a fish or two. Richard spent the last six years caring for our mother with compassion and tenderness, which allowed her to remain at home until her passing in September. A special thanks to his nephew, Jack Ellis, for his loyal and dedicated care of Richard over the last several months. Those who knew Richard wouldn't deny that he had an innate ability to connect with people at their core. His kind spirit and compassionate manner drew people close and made him a favorite of many. Children, in particular, had a natural fondness for Richard and most often sought out his attention over any other adult in the room. To know Richard was certainly to love him. Private funeral services will be held at a later date.
