Obituary of Mary M. McCarthy

Mary Margaret (Earley) McCarthy of Binghamton passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday morning, August 13, 2024. Born in 1940, Mary was predeceased by her husband John M. McCarthy, her parents Iona (Egan) Earley and Edward F. Earley, and her baby granddaughter Anna Nuuja. Mary was a caring mother, beloved by her six children, Christian, John, Kathryn (Dave Wakeman), Ellen (Thomas Dempsey), Jennifer (Robert Nuuja), and Sarah (David Edgell). She dearly loved her grandchildren Aiden McCarthy, Cormac Wakeman, Liam Edgell and Kara Edgell, with whom she enjoyed her final days. Her family was her greatest joy and she always put them first. She is also survived by her devoted siblings, Sister Katharine Earley CSJ, Edward (Karen) Earley, Becky Earley, Theresa (Thomas) Tiffany, and Judy Kelleher. She was predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law Margaret (Earley) Smith and Jonathan Smith, her brother John Earley (Sue), and her brothers-in-law James Kelleher and Gerald McKinney. Mary loved the extended McCarthy family who predeceased her including Margaret McCarthy, Paul McCarthy (Barbara), Thomas McCarthy, Billy McCarthy (Antena) and Vincent McCarthy. Remembering her also are many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. A lifelong member of The Church of Saints John and Andrew, Mary graduated from St. Patrick's Academy and Orange County Community College School of Nursing. Mary's nursing career included stops at New York University Hospital, St. Francis Hospital in Olean NY, Binghamton General Hospital, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York, and Corporate Care Management. The family would like to thank special friends Bridget Shoemaker and Mary Ellen Goetz, as well as Elaine Patterson and Jackie O'Neill for all their love and support. Mary loved flowers, family dinners, and making others happy. Whether it be by a kind note in the mail, or a surprise gift, Mary lived a life in service to others. Holidays were her favorite times of the year and she made sure that each one was celebrated and well represented with decorations in her home. The door was always open at Mary's house to welcome family, friends, and dogs. She will be greatly missed by the many people who loved her. A Funeral Mass will be offered at The Church of Saints John and Andrew, Vestal Avenue, Binghamton, on Saturday, August 17 at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at The Church of Saints John and Andrew, Saturday from 9:00-9:45 a.m. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in memory of Mary can be made to Danielle House at daniellehouse.org.
