I count having Bruce Borton as my teacher and mentor when I was a music student at West Georgia College, as defining time of my life. Bruce was a brilliant musician who inspired me and taught me so much! The skills I learned about choral music and conducting became the bedrock for me when I became a choral teacher. I thought of him often as I tried to share what he taught me to the students I had during my thirty year career. The music I learned with him has stayed in my heart. I’ve so many wonderful memories: drives into Atlanta for the ASO chorus/chamber chorus rehearsals & performance weeks, choir tours with WGC groups, Wassails & Carols, the many theatrical musicals at WGC and even round the table pizza dining at The Mansion in Carrollton! Bruce & Nan showed everyone what true love and commitment was all about. My deepest condolences to Nan for I know her heart is aching. Thank you for sharing Bruce with so many people. God be with you.

How very sad for all the music community. I sang with Bruce since 1990, first with the former Binghamton University Chorus before he became Madrigal Choir’s Artistic Director. As a protégé of the late Robert Shaw, Bruce was a master choral conductor, with a wide range of repertoire, a full toolbag of tips and tricks, and a gentleman with a sense of humor. I was very blessed to have discovered Bruce in 1990. After one semester singing under Bruce’s direction, I realized I had stumbled across the finest choral teacher in the area. He brought me back to choral singing after a hiatus of 20 years. That music got me through the rough times of corporate downsizing and gave me a whole new circle of friends…twice.
With Bruce we met many musical challenges, enjoyed many moments of thunderous affirmation, tra-la-la-ing humor, and tender tones. Bruce’s passing is a huge loss for all of us who sang with him, but we all have been blessed with creating beauty that transcends any single voice. “Requiem aeternam et lux perpetua luceat eis.” “Selig sind die Toten die in dem Herren sterben…selig…selig.”
