Obituary of Madeline A. Barno

Madeline left her earthly dwelling home on June 23, surrounded by family after a long and rewarding life. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Eugene, in 2008, her daughter, Sharon Smith in 2002, and daughter Margie Stackhouse (Matt Rose) in 2020. She leaves behind five children: Edward (Sharon), Skaneateles, James (Linda), Little Meadows, PA, Teresa Barno-Rossi (Steve), Milford, NJ, Gary (Alli), Webster, and Patrick (Lisa), Gettysburg PA. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren; Cara (Jerry) Kassees, Ryan (Lauren) Smith, Andrew (Lindsay) Barno, Meagan (Chris) Zdep, Todd (Riddhi) Stackhouse, Joshua (Kate) Rossi, Nicholas, Marie and Graham Rossi, Matthew Barno, Shannon (Will) Barbosa, Jessica and Benjamin Barno. The proud great grandmother of eleven, Christopher, Harper, Ed, Caleb, Aiden, Haley, Isla, Cormac, Rowan, Shyla and Wyatt. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, brother-in-law Robert Gibson, and sisters-in-law Mary Barno, Norene and Ethel Purtell. Madeline is predeceased by her parents, John and Mary Purtell, brothers Francis, Charles, Joseph, Donald and Robert and her sisters Mary and Ruth. Madeline was a graduate of Owego Free Academy and Binghamton "City" Hospital School of Nursing, class of 1951. She loved nursing, having worked in many capacities, including as an EMT with the Apalachin Fire Department for 15 years. She retired as a school nurse from Owego Elementary School. She was a founding member of St. Margaret Mary's church in Apalachin, having served in many ministries throughout the years, including as a Eucharistic minister, a Stephen's minister, the Altar and Rosary Society, the Finance Committee, and was active for many years on the Bereavement Committee. Madeline and Gene enjoyed life to the fullest, especially during their retirement years. They loved walking "up Barton and down Beach," dancing the polka, cross country skiing, bicycling and traveling. A special event in their lives was the annual family Winter Weekends at Allegheny and Betty and Wilbur Davis State Parks. After Gene's death, Madeline continued her traveling, having taken a train ride across the country with her daughter, FeFe to complete her agenda of visiting all 50 states. Madeline and Gene's license plate was "GONAGIN." Madeline will always be known for her zest of life, love of family, and her competitive spirit playing Euchre. A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Margaret Mary's Church, 1110 Pennsylvania Avenue, Apalachin, Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Apalachin. The family will receive friends at the J.A.
