Robert W. Coutant, 87, passed away on August 11, 2023 after a brief illness. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 50 years, Helen Stack Coutant. He is survived by his daughter Amy Melissa Stone; sons Stephen Robert Coutant and David Whitson Coutant; daughters-in-law Theresa Coutant and Meagan Gallagher; son-in-law Avie Stone; and grandchildren Madeleine, Harrison, Matthew, Kailah and Olive.

Robert was a respected and longstanding member of the Broome County legal community, having spent time as an Assistant Public Defender and Assistant District Attorney before ascending to the bench. Judge Coutant presided over City Court, County Court, and Supreme Court. He was intelligent and fair, tough yet compassionate, and acted with integrity. He treated everyone with respect.

Together Robert and Helen navigated their careers, raising children and, literally, the world. Robert worked hard to provide a beautiful and loving home for his family. He loved home projects, spending time with his family and friends, and most of all, traveling the world with the love of his life, Helen. He was truly one of a kind and will be missed by so many.

The family will receive friends at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main Street, Binghamton, Thursday August 17, 2023 from 5 to 7 p.m. Private entombment services will be held in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his honor be made to the UHS Foundation's Helen S. Coutant Memorial Fund, which Robert lovingly established after her passing.
