Joseph A. Maughan left us unexpectedly, Saturday, February 4th, 2023.Joe was born August 10th, 1937 in Pittston Pennsylvania and was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Genevieve Maughan. He lost the love of his life, Anne, in November of 2020. Joe leaves behind his two daughters, Michelle (Brian) Swan, Renee (Kevin) Perkins; his seven grandchildren, Patrick (Maria) Grace, Kathryn (Cameron) Soule, Alison (Jesse) Lynn, Matthew Grace, Martin (Grace) Perkins, McHale (Jordan) Rouse, and Camille Swan. "Joe-Pop" was blessed with four great granddaughters, Grace and Finley Soule and Ava and Fiora Grace. He also leaves behind his "Irish twin" sister, Sheila Stozenski, favorite brother Patrick (Carol) Maughan, and many loving nieces and nephews. After graduating from King's College in 1958, Joe began his teaching career in the Blue Ridge School District, before moving north to Binghamton, teaching French and Spanish in the Binghamton Schools, retiring after 38 years. He was a man who loved his children and grandchildren and was the father and grandfather to the many children who spent summers at the Police Athletic League (PAL Camp). Joe was a Little league coach, girls softball coach and a big supporter of the BCHS Bulldogs and Binghamton Patriots basketball teams. He was also a dedicated supporter of the Binghamton Community Orchestra. Joe was a great audience for his grandchildren and a good joke. He was well known for his infectious laugh, a good Manhattan, and being a Notre Dame Subway Alumnus. He had many long-time friendships with his teaching colleagues, bowling and golf buddies. "Wake up the echoes, Notre Dame, shake down the thunder from the sky, your most loyal son is passing by…" A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Highland Avenue, Binghamton, Friday March 31 at 12 noon. The family will receive friends at St. Thomas Aquinas Church Friday, March 31 from 11 a.m. until 12 noon. Burial will be in Vestal Hills Memorial Park.
