Dorothy Hatounian, 96, passed away on Friday August 19, 2022 at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 46 years, Ralph R. Hatounian, parents, Alice and George T. Elgin Sr.; her brothers, George T. Elgin, Jr. and Dr. Stephen Elgin and her sister, Helen Elgin Soffer. She is survived by her daughter Ellen Hatounian and her son Ralph D. Hatounian her granddaughter, Heather Rose Hatounian and two great-grandsons. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Virginia Elgin, Bethesda, MD and Phyllis Elgin, Safety Harbor, FL. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews.
After graduating from Binghamton Central High School in 1944 she was first employed by the Binghamton Department of Education. After her marriage to Ralph, they moved to Long Island where she was employed by New York Life Insurance Company working in their Fresh Meadows Division, a residential community. In 1958 they returned to Binghamton and upon the death of her father and brother George, she stepped into the management of the family business, Elgin's Oriental Rugs, until the closing in 1984. She finally retired from Security Mutual Life Insurance Company.
Dorothy was very devoted to her family. She felt rewarded and blessed to work as a volunteer at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, and was a lifelong member of Trinity Memorial Episcopal Church, Binghamton.
A celebration of Dorothy's life with be held at the J. A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main Street, Binghamton, Saturday at 10 a.m. Rev. Deacon Dorothy Pierce will officiate. Burial will be in Vestal Hills Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the McCormack Funeral Home Saturday from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Dorothy's memory may be made to Trinity Memorial Episcopal Church, 44 Main Street, Binghamton, NY 13905 or the charity of one's choice.
