Please share a memory of Rosemary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Rosemary Shanley Mahoney, a beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully at her home at Quaker Lake surrounded by her loving family, on May 31, 2022. She was 81 years old. She is pre-deceased by her father, James Shanley, her mother, Evelyn Shanley, her brother James Shanley, and her beloved granddaughter Charlotte Mahoney Beam. Rosemary was born in the Bronx, New York on February 15, 1941 and attended Saint Nicholas of Tolentine High School. She fell in love with her high school sweetheart, Paul Mahoney, with whom she attended school since the first grade. The couple married on June 15, 1963, starting a nearly six-decade journey together. After attending Hunter College, Rosemary worked in the fashion industry in the city while Paul completed his medical training. The couple moved several times in the early years of their marriage, living in Virginia, Miami and again in New York City before settling in Binghamton. There they raised five children, Kathleen (Kevin) Loughlin of Binghamton, Paul (Andrea) Mahoney, of Norfolk, Va., Elizabeth (Christopher) Fehr of Erie, Pa., Hilary (Michael) Beam of Binghamton, and Caroline Mahoney of Binghamton. They have been blessed with 13 grandchildren. After marriage, Rosemary focused her efforts on running the household and raising her family. She took care of all the household finances and investments, supervised her children's education, and traveled all over New York and beyond to attend the numerous basketball, soccer, cheer or horse matches in which her children would compete. Rosemary was an active presence in her community; she was a volunteer to many community organizations including the Junior League of Binghamton, St. Patrick's Church and Seton Catholic Central High School. She served as Chairwoman of the Lourdes Hospital Foundation and President of the Quaker Lake Cottage Association. Rosemary cherished the wonderful friendships she formed including her bridge club, her gourmet group, her lake friends and her tennis girls. After visiting Kiawah Island in the early 80's, Paul and Rosemary fell in love with the area. They began yearly vacations to the beach community and eventually decided to retire there, splitting time between Kiawah and Quaker Lake. Never meeting a stranger, Rosemary quickly formed tight relationships on the island, where she was an avid golfer, beach goer, and the consummate host to frequent dinner parties at their home. Her favorite times were always with family, and she made every occasion special. Her 13 grandchildren always knew Nanny was their champion, greatest supporter, and felt her unconditional love. Everyone close to Rosemary felt her love, warmth and joy for life. She was truly a special person, and she will be greatly missed.
