Sophie Gosney

Obituary of Sophie M. Gosney

Sophie M. Gosney passed away on December 17, 2020 surrounded by her loving children. She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Robert J. Gosney. Sophie is survived by her children, Mary Cay (Yinon), Julie, Bobby (Michelle Burnett) and grandchildren Conor Robert and Elyse Sophia Gosney. She is also survived by her sister in law Jayne Gosney. Aunt Sophie loved all of her nieces and nephews dearly. Sophie was very proud of her Slovak heritage and was fluent in speaking, writing and reading her parents native language. She passed on many Slovak holiday traditions, and was always our inspiration and teacher. Many of us will remember her calls reciting the special Christmas Eve prayer in Slovak and English. A true "Matriarch" for both the Anthony and Gosney families. She will be dearly missed by all. After graduating from St. Patricks High School, attending secretarial school, she began working at IBM Endicott. Later after her children were grown, Sophie worked at the Election office, and Duffy's law office. She was active in her parish as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister, and was a member of the Altar Rosary Society. Bob and Sophie were married July 17, 1954, and began a beautiful life together. She became a full time mother, supporting all of us, especially Dad. Sophie loved being with her family, her grandchildren and traveling to Boston and Rochester. Spending time watching sports with Dad, completing her daily Crossword puzzles, watching Hallmark and Jeopardy were among her favorite past times. The family would like to extend a special thank you to our dear friend Nu Evens and hospice team Jill McKenna RN and Jessica Meade SW. A Funeral Mass will be offered at SS. Cyril and Methodius Church, Clinton Street, Binghamton, Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. Due to the current Covid pandemic, there will be no public visitation. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Sophie's memory may be made to SS.
