Obituary of Joseph D. Shores

Joseph D. Shores, of Vestal, born January 21, 1925, died Wednesday afternoon, November 20, 2013, at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital several days after suffering a large stroke. He is predeceased by his loving wife of 60 years, Helen Miller Shores and survived by his children, Edward F. Shores and wife Shirley Wagner Shores, Charles J. Shores; his daughter, Shawn Shores and husband James E. Neely III. He leaves his grandchildren, Sarah (Shores) Hewson and husband Ben Hewson, Joseph Max Shores and Zoe, Holden, Axel, Jack and Ivy Neely. He is survived by one brother, Robert Shores and wife Marion; and two sisters-in-law, Betty Shores and Barbara Shores; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was the faithful son of the late Francis and Mary McMahon Shores and loving brother to the late Marie, James and Dick Shores. He was a member of the Church of Saints John and Andrew, Binghamton. He served our country in WWII from 1943-1946 in the US Army's 98th Infantry Division as a cook and machine gunner. He also served in the Naval Reserves as a seaman and was called to active duty during the Korean War Conflict in 1950. After 27 years, he retired from the US Post Office. In the 33 years after retirement, he worked for the Broome County Office for the Aging and Willow Run Food Distributors and completed his last several golf seasons as a ranger at Hiawatha Golf Course. Joseph was active in the community as a member of the Knights of Columbus, Peter T. Campon Council 206 and the Fourth Degree Assembly and an active member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the American Legion Post 1645. A Funeral Mass will be offered at the Church of Saints John and Andrew, Vestal Ave., Binghamton, Monday at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main St., Binghamton, Sunday from 2-4:30 p.m. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Joe may be made to the Ancient Order of Hibernians Building Fund, 148 Main St., Binghamton, NY 13905.
