Louis P. Augostini, a long time resident and public servant of the Village of Johnson City and of Broome County, passed away on Thursday, June 21, 2018. Louis was born on December 16, 1933, the seventh of eleven children born to Louis J. and Mary (Vagnoni) Augostini of Olean, New York (Offida, Italy). A graduate of Olean High School, Louis served in the United States Army until his honorable discharge on June 26, 1951. On June 12, 1954, Louis earned his associate degree in Applied Science from the State University of New York at Alfred. Louis then studied journalism at St. Bonaventure University graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree on June 5, 1960. Thereafter, he began his distinguished career as a journalist with the Binghamton Press, earning a nomination for the Pulitzer Prize in beating the deadline. In 1965, he joined IBM where he worked as a technical writer for twenty-seven years. Throughout his lifetime, Louis served his community faithfully as a dedicated public servant first as a Trustee for the Village of Johnson City for twelve years and then as a Broome County Legislator for ten years. From 1998 until 2006, Louis served as Clerk of the Broome County Legislature. Louis also was a member of the Johnson City Kiawanis Club and served as its President in 1972, and was named as Kiwanian & JayCee's "Man of the Year." A devout Catholic, Louis was a long-time member of Blessed Sacrament Parish and a current member of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Binghamton. He served as a lector and member of the Nocturnal Adoration Society for many years. His lifelong dream was to become a Trappist Monk. He enjoyed going to the Court Jester Athletic Club, watching old re-runs of Gunsmoke and NY Yankee baseball. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family. Louis is survived by his loving wife of fifty-five years, Dolores (Manni) Augostini; his seven children, Lorraine Augostini(Steven Insley), Christopher Augostini (Maria Tudico), Patricia Augostini, Andrea Courtney, Thomas Augostini (Patricia Sas), Louis Augostini (Shannon Lee), Vincent Augostini; his grandchildren, Rachael and Madeleine Augostini, Elena and Ben Insley, Tommy, Michael and Matthew Courtney, Emma, Joseph and Leah Augostini. Louis is also survived by his siblings: Josephine Jordan, Robert Augostini, Marion Gentile (Robert), William Augostini (Joyce) and Carl Augostini (Roberta); three sisters in law Grace Mariani, Frances Manni and Dorothy Manni; and many nieces and nephews. Louis is predeceased by his parents, and his siblings: Nicholas Augostini, Rose Orsini, Laura Cory, Teresa Questa, Peter Augostini. A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Highland Ave., Binghamton Monday at 12:30 p.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main Street Binghamton, Sunday from 2-5 p.m. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy in Lou's name may be made to the Southern Tier Independence Center, 135 East Frederick St., Binghamton, NY 13901.
