Obituary of Dr. Richard G. Hobart

Dr. Richard G Hobart, 85, passed away at Good Shephard Fairview Home on March 5, 2017 after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Margaret (Margy) O'Loughlin Hobart. He is also survived by his children Meg Hobart, Bridgette Hobart Janeczko (Bob), and James F Hobart (Kimberly Collins). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Corey Hobart and Casey Hobart (Ryan Wall). He is survived by his brother and sister in law John and Joanne O'Loughlin, and niece and nephews Mary Eileen, Kevin and Joseph O'Loughlin. Zander, Dick's 4 legged companion, will greatly miss him. He was pre deceased by his mother, Pauline Vanosky Simmons and James H Hobart, and a brother James Hobart. Dick was a graduate of Binghamton North High School Class of 1950, Columbia College Class of 1954 and Pacific University School of Optometry (1957). He practiced optometry for 52 years in the Binghamton area, and owned Hobart Stone Dealers, Inc., a company he started when he was 14 year old and Finger Lakes Stone, Inc. He enjoyed many years of off shore power boat racing, and was an active member in the community. He had a love of wooden boats and treasured his gem on Seneca Lake, and enjoyed visiting with friends at the lake. He served on the Binghamton planning board, past President of the AVRE (formerly Blind Work Association) where he served for 44 years, NY Power Squadron, past President of South Central Optometric Society and American Optometric Society where he was a member for 59 years and awarded Optometrist of the year, and was a past President of the Binghamton Lions Club where he was a member for 55 years. He enjoyed many social activities at the Binghamton Club where he was a member for 57 years. A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Paul's Church, corner of Chenango and Robinson Streets, Binghamton, Friday at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the J. A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main Street, Binghamton, Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in memory of Dick be sent to Living Care Fund at Good Shephard Fairview Home, 80 Fairview Ave, Binghamton NY 13904 or Binghamton Lions Club, PO Box 776, Binghamton NY 13902.
