Obituary of Daniel E. Berry

Daniel Edward Berry Sr., 82, a resident of Hillcrest, formerly of Buffalo, New York died peacefully on January 26, 2017 at the NYS Veterans Home in Oxford, NY. Dan was born August 8, 1934 to the late Wesley and Marion (Wallace) Berry in Buffalo, NY. He served in the United States Army, stationed in Furth, Germany. Upon his return, Dan was employed by General Mills as a salesman and account executive for over 35 years. The consummate fan of the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Indians, he was also a proud member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians serving as an officer for several years, and formerly a member and officer of Kiwanis. Additionally, he was past member of the BPO Elks and American Legion. Dan also took an active role in his church and civic communities. He is remembered as Coach by many former little leaguers and softball players as well as CYO basketball players. On October 19, 1957, Dan married the love of his life, Denise Ann McHugh who survives him. Dan was tremendously proud of his family and found special joy in spending time with his 12 grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Denise Berry, he is survived by five children and their spouses: Daniel Berry, Jr and Lori of Albany, NY, Brian Berry and Audrey of Newtown, PA, Lynn Marie Reale and John of St. Charles, IL, Marcia Hendery and Bill of Bennington, VT, Denise Potochnik and Michael of Wake Forest, NC ; his sisters, Marjorie Dowling and Carol Berry of Buffalo, NY and a brother Ronald Berry of California. Dan was the proud grandfather of Matthew, Emily and Skyler Berry, Justine, Joanna and Jill Reale, Kevin, Colleen and Thomas Hendery, Hannah, Kaitlyn and Olivia Potochnik. Dan was predeceased by his parents, Wesley and Marion Berry, one sister, Marilyn Anderson, and brothers Richard, Raymond and Jack Berry. The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the staff and caregivers on the Pine Neighborhood at the NYS Veterans Home in Oxford, NY for the exceptional care they provided to Dan. A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Chenango Street, Hillcrest, Tuesday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Chenango Valley Cemetery, Hillcrest. The family will receive friends at the J. A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main Street, Binghamton, Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the National Alzheimer's Association or the Residents Activity fund at the NYS Veterans Home, 4207 State Highway 220, Oxford NY 13830.
