Mary R. Whelan, 91, of Binghamton, passed away Saturday, December 24, 2016, at Lourdes Hospital. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Whelan, and her parents, John and Genevieve Hanagan. She was the last surviving Hanagan sibling, predeceased by her brothers Jack, Robert, and William, and sisters, Helen and Kate. She is survived by her loving son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Karen Whelan, of Binghamton; granddaughters, Kaitlin Whelan, of Albany, NY, Molly Whelan, of Charlotte, NC, and Allison Whelan, of New Haven, CT; as well as several nieces and nephews. Mary was born on May 8, 1925, the youngest of six siblings. She grew up in Brackney, PA, on her family's farm. She later moved to Binghamton, where she met Joseph, whom she married on September 24, 1949. Mary worked throughout the community, including the Office for the Aging, as a volunteer for Lourdes Hospital, and for the past twenty years, the Facilities Department at Binghamton University. She was a dedicated member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Binghamton. She was a loving mother and grandmother, actively involved in her granddaughters' lives and always willing to provide them loving care. She was so loved and will be deeply missed by her family. A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Highland Avenue, Binghamton, Thursday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main Street, Binghamton, Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Mary may be made to Lourdes Hospital Foundation, 169 Riverside Drive, Binghamton, New York 13905
