Charles C. Hanley, 93, of Binghamton, passed into Eternal Rest on Saturday, March 5, 2016. He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Aletha Hanley. He is survived by his son, Patrick Hanley, Caledonia; daughter, Susan Messersmith, Binghamton; grandchildren, Patrick and Amy Hanley-Dykstra (Matt), Kyle Messersmith; great grandchildren, Drake and Leonard; several nieces, nephews, and wonderful friends and neighbors. He was a member of the Church of Saints John and Andrew, Binghamton. Born of Irish immigrant parents in Hell's Kitchen, NYC, he enlisted in the US Naval Reserve and was activated in World War II serving in the Pacific. Upon discharge from the Navy, he attended Champlain College, Plattsburg, where he met his wife, Aletha. They moved to Arlington, VA, and he graduated from George Washington University, Washington, DC, with a degree in law. Two children were born to them, then they moved to Yonkers, and on to Schenectady before settling in Binghamton as their home for the remainder of his life. Charles was employed with the Allstate Insurance, Co., for many years and practiced law with the firm of Scanlon, Vetrano & Hanley before becoming a NYS Workers Compensation referee. Charles went on to become an Administrative Law Judge with the US Social Security Administration in Roanoke, VA, before retiring in 1984 and returning home to Binghamton. He was a member of the Nocturnal Adoration Society, Broome County Bar Assoc. for over 50 years and a member of the Knights of Columbus, Peter T. Campon Council #206. The family wishes to extend their deep gratitude to the staff of St. Louise Manor and Elizabeth Church Manor for their genuine concern and caring for our Father. A Funeral Mass will be offered at the Church of Saints John and Andrew, Vestal Ave., Binghamton on Tuesday at 10am. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main St., Binghamton on Monday from 4-7pm. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Charles may be made to any charitable organization.
