Newman, Howard E., Sr. Hillcrest: Howard E. Newman, Sr., 88, of Hillcrest, died Sunday, July 22, 2012, at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital after a brief illness. He was predeceased by his first wife, Arleah "Lee" Newman; his second wife, Margaret Dempsey Newman; his son, Albert "Bucky" Newman; and his brother, Albert P. Newman. He is survived by his children, Lawrence C. and Darlene Newman, Orlando, FL, Lynn and Bob Svarney, Binghamton, Howard E. Newman Jr. and Patricia "Pat" Connors, Johnson City and Apalachin, Steve Belo; daughter-in-law, Gloria Newman, Johnson City; grandchildren, Dr. Robert Svarney, Kim and Tim Morris, Keith and Trisha Newman, Kevin Newman, Duffy Newman; several great-grandchildren; very dear friend, Lillian Gould. He was an outstanding member of St. Francis of Assisi Church, Hillcrest. Howard was a US Army veteran of World War II and proud survivor of D-Day Invasion, Omaha Beach. He was a member of American Legion Post 758, the Last Man's Club, and the VFW. He was the retired proprietor of Newman Bros. Hardware and Auto Sales in Johnson City and was involved in real estate investments. A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Chenango Street, Hillcrest, Wednesday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at St. Francis of Assisi Church Wednesday from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in memory of Howard may be made to St. Francis of Assisi Church, 1031 Chenango Street, Binghamton, NY 13901. Arrangements are by the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main Street, Binghamton, NY 13905.
