Obituary of Judson S. Griffin, MD

Judson (Jud) S. Griffin, MD - dedicated physician and devoted father and husband - died on June 14, 2014 in Stuart, FL after a long illness. A native of Binghamton, NY, he was 93 years young. Jud was predeceased by his parents, Howard and Frances Griffin; his wife, Edith K. Griffin; and a sister, Frances Wise. He is survived by a sister, Jane Kanache of Novelty, OH; a son, Judson S. Griffin, Jr. of Binghamton, NY; daughter Terri Harvey and son-in-law Keith Harvey of West Springfield, MA; daughter, Wendy Demartini and son-in-law Phil Demartini of Littleton, CO; grandson, Scott Harvey and his wife Kristen of Wilbraham, MA; grandson, Timothy Harvey of West Springfield, MA; granddaughter, Kate Zink and her husband Jeff of Cincinnati, OH; granddaughter, Kim Li and her husband Ping of Palo Alto, CA; and grandson, Judd Demartini of Littleton, CO. He also leaves seven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Jud was a graduate of Binghamton Central High School, Colgate University and Harvard Medical School. He served in the U.S Navy Medical Corps during World War II and the Korean Conflict. Dr. Griffin was certified by the American Board of Physicians, was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and was a member of the Broome County Medical Society, the New York State Medical Society and the American Medical Association. He served terms as President of the Broome County Medical Society and of the Medical Staff of Binghamton General Hospital. Jud also served as Chairman of the Surgical Departments of Lourdes Hospital and Binghamton General Hospital. He was a founder of Surgical Associates of Binghamton and was a long time member of the First Congregational Church of Binghamton where he served two terms on the Board of Deacons, one as its Chairman. An avid fisherman and sailing enthusiast, Jud enjoyed more than 40 years of respite on the St. Lawrence River in upstate New York. A fierce competitor, he played golf and singles tennis into his 80s. The family wishes to thank the Stuart Nursing Home and Restorative Care Center and the Treasure Coast Hospice Association of Stuart, FL for their care and compassion. Special thanks to Jackie Grant for helping him maintain his dignity. There will be no calling hours. A private funeral is being arranged by J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home of Binghamton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Continuing Education of the Nursing Staff at either Lourdes Hospital (Attn: Lourdes Hospital Foundation, 169 Riverside Drive, Suite 103, Binghamton, NY 13905) or United Health Services (Attn: UHS Foundation, 10-42 Mitchell Avenue, Binghamton, NY 13903) or to the charity of one's choice .
