Please share a memory of Samuel to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Samuel J. Miller of Binghamton, NY, was reunited with his wife Anne on April 12, 2014 at Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial Hospital. Samuel J. Miller, born in Hornell, NY in October of 1922, served in World War II from 1943 to 1945 as a locomotive engineer in the 748th Railway Operating Battalion of the United States Army in the India-Burma theater. In 1946, he married Anne Horkott Miller, his wife of 62 years, who entered into everlasting life on June 11, 2008. In 1946, he returned to work at the Erie Railroad firing engines, and over his career he worked his way up to Road Foreman of Engines for Conrail, supervising an area that extended from New Jersey to Ohio. In 1988, he retired after 46 years of dedicated service. Samuel and Anne Miller are survived by their eight children and their families: by their son Timothy J. Miller and his wife Cathy, and their children, Holly, Timalynn, and Katrina; by their daughter Susan M. Miller and her husband Stephen W. Miller, and their son Stephen and his wife Becky, their daughter Christina and her husband Gregory Stevens, and their son Matthew and his wife Jessica, and daughter Catherine; Frank W. Miller and his wife Lisa, and their children Shaun and Stephanie Maroney, Emily and Michael; by their son Charles J. Miller and his children Dillon Affatato, Christian and Jacqueline; by their daughter Anne M. Kuhnen and her husband Frederick, and their children Alexander and Caitlin; by their daughter Nancy M. White and her husband Lenny, and their children Julia and Sarah; by their son John S. Miller and his wife Jodi, and their children John Nicholas, Charlotte, and Annabel; and by their daughter Mary S. Peckham and her husband Joseph, and their children Meredith, Suzannah, and Madeline. In addition, Samuel and Anne Miller are survived by great grandchildren, Sophie, Jack and Hannah Miller, and twins Ava and Olivia Stevens. Samuel J. Miller lived a life of honor and service to family, church, and country. His passions in life were his wife and family, and the game of golf played at Ely Park and Vestal Hills Country Club. The family loved hearing stories about train derailments and the characters he worked with during his years on the railroad. It always made his day when he would run into a former coworker. Samuel and Anne supported the construction and dedication of St. Vincent DePaul Church and were loyal parishioners. In his later years he could be found daily at the 9AM Mass with his rosary beads in hand. Sam and Anne sought to follow the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in thoughts, feelings, and actions. They now live through the blessed might of Christ. Family members thank Sam's caregivers for the loving kindness they bestowed upon him: Sue Presutto, Sue Springsteen, Debbie Turner, Becky Patterson, Carol Martin, and Linda Giordano. Their efforts were exemplary. A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Vincent DePaul Blessed Sacrament Church, Clubhouse Road, Vestal Tuesday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main Street, Binghamton Monday from 4-6 p.m. Family members ask that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Lourdes Hospice Camp Hope, 4102 Old Vestal Road, Vestal, NY 13850 in memory of Samuel and Anne Miller.
