Dorothy V. "Gail" Harlec Obituary
Gail was born July 26, 1945 in Johnson City, NY to Charles and Dorothy Van Kuren. She died on June 30, 2026, at Mercy House of the Southern Tier.
Gail is predeceased by her spouse, Stanley Harlec, her parents, and her brother Jerry Van Kuren. She is survived by her two daughters, Tanya (George) McGuire and Charlene (Brent) Tesla. Gail, fondly known as Mema by her grandchildren, Sophie Tesla and Grace, Abby and Aidan McGuire will be greatly missed. She is survived also by her brother, Father Corey Van Kuren, and her sister Sharon Van Kuren. She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.
Gail had a long and fulfilling career as a telephone operator with MaBell and eventually retired from AT and T. She then worked as a receptionist at UHS for several years. Gail was a faithful parishioner of St. James Parish and served on the bereavement luncheon committee. She also volunteered at Danielle House. Gail enjoyed walking, cheering on her Yankees, and especially enjoyed being with family and friends.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated by her brother Rev. Corey Van Kuren, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday July 8, 2026 at St. James Church, Main Street, Johnson City. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at St. James Church, Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m.
Her family requests donations be considered to Mercy House of the Southern Tier, 212 N. McKinley Avenue, Endicott, NY 13760 or Guthrie Hospice of Vestal.
