Eugene D. Flood Obituary

Eugene (Gene) Flood passed away on May 14, 2026. Gene was born October 23, 1935 in Allentown, PA., a son of the late Hugh E. and Wilhelmina Flood. Gene resided on the Southside of Binghamton since 1952 and was an active member of Saint John the Evangelist Church and its successor, the Parish of Saints John and Andrew. Gene graduated from Binghamton North School in 1953 and from Harpur College (Now Binghamton University) in 1957. He did his graduate work at Syracuse University. From 1957 through 1961 he taught Mathematics at East Junior High School. He transferred to Binghamton Central High School in 1961 and taught mathematics through 1965. Gene assumed the position of Administrative Assistant to the Chairman of the Humanities Division at Binghamton University on September 1, 1965. After several years in that position, Gene was promoted to Administrative Assistant to the Dean of Harpur College of Arts and Sciences. During his 33-year tenure at the University, Gene assisted five Deans and two acting Deans. In recognition of his services he received the following awards: Binghamton University Council-Foundation Award 1981, Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Professional Service 1982, The Glenn G. Bartle Distinguished Alumnus Award 1998, The Eugene D. Flood Award for Distinguished Service to Harpur College 1998. Gene retired from Binghamton University in July 1998. After his retirement he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Binghamton University Alumni Association and was a very active member. His services to his church were many. He was a Eucharistic Minister, Usher, Secretary to the Holy Name Society, member of the Parish Council and the Finance Committee. He devoted hundreds of hours to his parish. In addition, Gene was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #206 and a Fourth Degree member of the Rev. J.F.Hourigan 724 Assembly. He also enjoyed his years helping at Bingo at Council #206 on Thursdays. He was also a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians for many years.


Gene was predeceased by his brother, Hugh E. Flood, Jr. and his sister and brother-in-law Patricia Flood and Joseph DeSousa. He is survived by a niece and two nephews, Sue Ellen Sadar Hygiene, Co., Joseph (Ann) DeSousa, Boulder, CO. Daniel (Linda) DeSousa, Honea Path, SC. He is also survived by several grand-nieces and nephews. He is survived by several cousins, two very special ones, Ann Dolan (Duane) Hunter and family (GA) and Kate Dolan (PA). He is also survived by dear friends Geri, Carol, Mark,Mo, Marlene and Dave and many other close friends and neighbors, too many to mention.



A Funeral Mass will be offered at Saints John and Andrew Church, 1263 Vestal Ave., Binghamton, Tuesday May 19, 2026 at 11 a.m. Burial in Calvary Cemetery will be private. The family will receive friends at the Church of Saints John and Andrew, Tuesday from 9:45 a.m. until10:45 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Eugene D. Flood Scholarship Fund, c/o Binghamton University Foundation, PO Box 6005 Binghamton, New York 13002-6005, or to the Parish of Saints John and Andrew.
