Dora Elsa "Mama" Barbosa Obituary
Dora Elsa "Mama" Barbosa, a woman whose life was defined by adventure, craftsmanship, and an unwavering devotion to her family, passed away on April 20, 2026. Born on Christmas Day in 1943 in Bogotá, Colombia, Elsa was a gift to her parents, Cipriano and Emma Silva, and to everyone who would come to know her "special magic."
A Life of Adventure and Love.
After earning her bachelor's degree in business, Elsa married the love of her life, Jose Barbosa, on November 29, 1962. In 1970, fueled by bravery and a shared vision, they moved to the United States to pursue the American Dream. Together, they built a legacy that spanned 63 years of marriage - a partnership that served as the heartbeat of their ever-growing family.
Elsa was a cornerstone of the "Barbosa Clan," a unique and tight-knit family bond furthered by the rare and joyful circumstance of two sisters marrying two brothers.
Elsa believed in the beauty of handmade things. Whether she was knitting sweaters, scarves, or her signature blankets, her warmth was woven into every stitch. When she was not creating, she was exploring. The Ultimate Navigator, she loved to travel, always seeking out the next endless adventure.
Elsa had a legendary eye for a bargain, turning every shopping trip into a successful mission.
Her cooking was a central part of family gatherings, nourishing both body and soul.
Elsa is preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Gladys Barbosa; her brother, Eduardo Silva; and her beloved son, Mauricio Barbosa.
Her spirit lives on through her husband, Jose; her children, William Barbosa, Edgar (Dragica) Barbosa, and Liliana (Ted) Finch; and her brother-in-law, Mario Barbosa. She also leaves behind a vibrant legacy in her six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and a large, loving network of nieces and nephews.
Elsa had a special magic and definitely left the world a better place than she found.
A Celebration of Life will be held later this summer to honor Elsa's remarkable journey. Details will be shared with family and friends as the date approaches.
