Obituary of Gregory J. Farrell

Gregory John Farrell, age 61, went home to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on Monday January 26, 2026, after a long illness. He was predeceased by his wife of 26 years, Donna Ann, where they resided in California for many years. Greg relocated back to his hometown of Binghamton after her passing. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Donald & Lillian Farrell, and his brother Brian Farrell. He is survived by his step children Samantha Martinson (Nicholas)-California, Scott Sutton (Rosemary)-California, and grandchildren who Greg adored; Carter and Hannah, along with Vivian, Grace, and Roman. Greg is also survived by his siblings; Sandra Nemcek (Brad)-Endicott, Dr. Donald B. Farrell and Dr. Cheryl M. Vermette-New Hampshire, Richard Farrell (Harry Aiu)- Hawaii, and Mary K Jensen (Erik)-Binghamton. He is also survived by many wonderful nieces, nephews and cousins, and a dear friend Rob Rifenburgh. Greg graduated from Binghamton High School, where he was a 3-sport athlete, having played football, basketball, and baseball. In addition, he spent countless hours at Rec Park as a youth. He also enjoyed playing ping-pong, and hobbies that included photography, and painting. After high school, he went on to earn a AAS Degree from Broome Community College, and a B.A. Degree from SUNY Cortland. He also attended the University of Connecticut. Greg's career path took him down many roads, including work in Retail Sales, Retail Management, and work as a Medical Equipment Technical Specialist. Greg loved to play cards, especially highly competitive games of Spades, and Solitaire with his siblings, or a cut-throat board game of Pollyanna. Greg was also an animal lover and loved his numerous dogs. Greg was an avid sportsman, he enjoyed, hunting, fishing, especially surf fishing in Long Beach Island, N.J., his happy place, and fly fishing. He was proud that he learned to tie his own flies. He also enjoyed archery and bow hunting with his brothers and father. Greg was a family man and enjoyed having a big family. He was very fond of his Irish Heritage and being "Farrell Strong". Greg's most cherished memories were the many vacations to the Jersey shore on Long Beach Island with his family, and his trips to Disney with wife Donna and their family. The family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to the UHS Medical Center, Main Tower, 5th floor staff and nurses, with special thanks to Tracie, Kayla, and Marshall, for their compassion and excellent care in Greg's final journey. A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Patrick's Church, corner of Oak and Leroy Streets, Binghamton, Monday February 9, 2026 at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at St. Patrick's Church, Monday February 9 from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. The Mass will be live streamed at www.sta-sp.org
