James R. Rickard, 81 years old, of Binghamton, NY passed away on January 22, 2026, at the NYS Veteran's Home in Oxford, NY. Jim was born in Binghamton, NY on January 14, 1945. He grew up and graduated from Deposit High School. Jim is survived by his wife of 54 years MaryAnn; his sons Chris (Michell) and Brian Rickard; his grandchildren Camren, Collin and Gabriella and Grand Dog Kuma. Jim is also survived by his brothers Joseph (Mary Jane) and David (Maureen) and his nephew and niece. Also, his extended family of residents and staff at the Oxford Veteran's Home. Jim was a proud Veteran of the U.S Army. Jim Served in the 589th Engineer Battalion as a Combat Medic in Vietnam where he received an Army Commendation Medal for his outstanding service. Upon completion of his service, he worked multiple jobs in the medical field at local hospitals and with Superior Ambulance. He then obtained his Associate's degree in Registered Nursing from Broome Community College and worked locally, until being recruited to manage operating rooms in South Dakota, California, and Idaho. After returning to Binghamton, he was a Unit Charge Nurse at Highgate Manor until physical issues forced him to retire. Though unable to continue working as an RN, he continued to use his medical knowledge to assist others. Jim was a Volunteer Fireman for 5 Mile Point and Marathon Fire Departments. He was also a member of Organization of Vietnam Veterans and the American Legion. Jim was a fixture at all his sons' sporting events and was always willing to provide support for anyone who needed it, whether it was a ride to an event, advice, or equipment. Everyone knew that Choo Choo or Mr. Rickard would be there for them. The family will receive friends at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main Street, Binghamton, Saturday February 7, 2026 from 11 a.m until 1 p.m. Military Honors will be conferred at 1 p.m. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff at the Oxford Veteran's Home for their excellent care and support during Jim's 2-year stay. Memorial Donations may be made to the NYS Veterans Home at Oxford, 4207 NY Route 220 Oxford, NY 13830 in Jim's memory.
