Obituary of Anne R. McCarthy
Please share a memory of Anne to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Anne R. McCarthy, of Johnson City, New York, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2026, at the age of 90.
Born on May 2, 1935, Anne lived a life rooted in faith, love, and quiet strength. A devoted Catholic, her faith was a guiding presence throughout her life, shaping her compassion, humility, and deep sense of gratitude. She found comfort and purpose in her beliefs and lived them through kindness and service to others.
Anne was predeceased by her former spouse, Eugene McCarthy and six siblings, Steve, Paul, Jack, Gene, and Chris Purtell, and Mae Feeney, and her parents Norene and James Purtell. She was born in Little Meadows, P.A., the youngest child of a large and loving Irish family.
Anne retired from a fulfilling career at Binghamton University, where she was known for her dedication and strong work ethic. In retirement, she devoted herself to what brought her the greatest joy—time spent with her family and grandchildren, whom she loved fiercely and unconditionally. She especially enjoyed gardening, traveling, playing cards, the Buffalo Bills and LA Dodgers, and sharing laughter and companionship with her many wonderful friends. Anne's warmth, generosity, and gentle spirit created lasting bonds with all who knew her.
Anne is survived by her children: Timothy McCarthy; Christopher McCarthy and his wife Jennifer; Margaret McCarthy and Michael Steeg; Theresa Taro and her husband Nicholas; James McCarthy; Joseph McCarthy; her six beloved grandchildren: Vanessa Powley and her husband Chad; Nicholas Taro; Taylor McCarthy; Hannah McCarthy; Tessa McCarthy; and Zachary Taro; her many special nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved; and her special friend, Clyde Tackley, who held a meaningful place in her life.
Anne will be remembered for her steadfast faith, her devotion to family, her love of nature and community, and the many friendships she cherished. Her legacy of love, kindness, and faith will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her. She now rejoins loved ones who have gone before her and rests in the peace of Christ.
