Obituary of Louis J. Kelly
Louis J. Kelly, a lifelong Binghamton resident and the city's former Commissioner of public works, died peacefully on Nov. 14, 2025 at Mercy House in Endicott after a long struggle with cancer. He was 73.
For the past several years, Lou battled the difficult hand he was dealt with a brave face and without complaint, serving as an inspiration to his legions of friends. Son of the late Gerald and Marilyn Kelly, Lou graduated from St. Thomas School and Seton Catholic Central High School. He then earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from St. Bonaventure University, beginning a lifelong love affair with "all things Bona's." He was known for his many stories and impressions, as well as his devotion to his beloved New York Mets and St. Bonaventure Bonnies, the Buffalo Bills and Dallas Cowboys. More than anything, he enjoyed spending time and discussing all sorts of topics with family and friends -- especially his son and best pal, Bob, who survives.
After working in other positions in the private and public sectors, Lou took special pride in directing the city Department of Public Works for 12 years. Besides his son, he is survived by his wife, the former Diane Toomey, whom he married in 1993, as well as many Kelly and Hanifin cousins. He was predeceased by his beloved sister, Mauretia. Lou's many friends from the Binghamton and St. Bona communities will attest: To have met Lou was to feel like you'd made a friend for life.
A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. James Church, Main Street, Johnson City, Friday November 21, 2025 at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main Street, Binghamton, Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m.
