I met Tim on the set of my senior thesis short film, Under Refurbishment, in 2022. Though I spent just a few days with Tim, I was impressed by his kindness, professionalism, and talent. He was friendly and warm and I'm saddened to hear of his passing. I will think of Tim fondly and I offer my condolences to his family.

I was so lucky to meet Tim on the Oswego Alumni podcast. I was so struck by his honesty about the ups and downs of a career in the arts but mostly our talk about caring for aging parents. It is my favorite episode of the podcast and I told him that in person when we met a few months ago. He was a delight in real life and a true light. The world needs more Tim’s who lead with the heart. May his memory and his humor be a comfort to all of us who knew him.

I had the good fortune to be friends with Tim Mollen at SUNY Oswego. One year, we lived in a dorm suite with a bunch of great guys (his roommate and best friend Dan, as well as Mark, Joe, Howie, Rich & myself.) We threw some fun parties there and Tim was the host with the most, the Master of Ceremonies, who always came up with creative ideas for theme parties (i.e. “Night of a Hundred Stars”.) He was the main reason that so many people showed up for those parties and kept coming back for them. Tim just had a natural charm and magnetism, as well as such a great laugh and genuine love of humor. He connected with people by making them laugh and he loved to laugh himself. He was easy to get to know since he was very friendly, personable and sincere, and he made friends everywhere he went. Tim was an extraordinary person in so many ways - mainly for his sense of humor, but he was so much more than just the funniest person I have ever known. He was truly a remarkable and unforgettable person. I’ll always cherish my memories of Tim. I have no doubt that up in Heaven, he will continue to do Improv comedy - and to throw great theme parties. I just wanted to share those memories and to express my sincere condolences for this tragic loss to his family and all of his many friends. - Desmond Sullivan

To all sharing memories here- thank you! And so sorry for YOUR loss. Tim isn’t leaving anyone’s memory bank anytime soon. But reading all of these notes for the first time is truly heartwarming. Our family noted not only the number of people that were important to Tim, but the quality of those people. Big hearts. Will speak for my entire family here: Thank you all so very, very much!! I’ve been stunned for days, trying to come to terms with this. Torn about whether or not to discuss this with anyone, for fear it would become true.
My dear friend Tim passed away this week, at much too early an age. I’ve known Tim much longer than I haven’t known him. And I am a better person because of it.
Tim made people laugh, of course. His incredible sense of humor is undeniable. And that was not just a veneer, or shell, to protect himself with. He genuinely connected to people through humor. He met them where they were and reveled in the joy of being with them. And this helped him bring together so many different groups of people.
But beyond humor, there were so many other positive qualities he embodied. I don’t pretend to be as articulate or eloquent as Tim-o. He could write an A+ paper in a couple hours, starting at 2 in the morning. And often did.
But I have come up with the following list of traits that describe him perfectly, and I think everyone that knew him will be able to recall specific instances where he showed these characteristics.
Tim was:
Kind
Empathetic
Compassionate
Respectful
Honest
Trustworthy
Principled
Responsible
Reliable
Accountable
Humble
Selfless
Forgiving
Patient
Generous
These were not abstract ideas to Tim. They were innate, and in full effect in everything Tim did.
I will miss him immeasurably. And I will watch every season of SCTV (again), preferably with a fuzzy signal from being broadcast across the Lake (from Kingston Ontario), maybe with a Domino’s pizza. Then I’ll go to sleep, and envision Tim beginning to write another paper, from scratch, of the highest caliber.

My husband Dan was lucky enough to be randomly paired with Tim as a roommate his freshman year at SUNY Oswego. They stayed roommates all four years, as it was obviously a meeting of the minds. When it came time for Dan to pick a best man for our wedding, Tim was it. And he took the job seriously!
Tim was at the center of my most favorite wedding day memories. First, he gave the BEST best man speech of all time. We continue to regret not hiring a videographer for the event, but that just means the speech gets better in our minds as time marches on.
Second, at the afterparty at the bar, we were treated to an epic comedy duel between Tim (the funniest guy Dan knows) and Jay (the funniest guy I know). It turned out to be a tie and the rest of us came out winners for having been in the room for it.
I see Tim’s influence on Dan every day. He was that rare friend who Dan could pick up with right where they left off, even if years had passed. I swear Tim turned Dan back into a 19-yo every time they were on the phone. Tim’s stories are repeated often in our house, and will make me laugh, every single time. They are told so often, our children know them by heart.
All of this is to say that there is an unimaginable void with his loss that we can’t fully comprehend. But his kind and playful spirit will stick with us forever.

That Tim was very talented is almost beside the point: Tim's greatest gift was his compassion. When I came to Oswego midway through our sophomore year, he made sure to make me feel included during "St. Joan," and time and time again over the years I saw that same concern for others' well-being - even people who annoyed him (which was probably all of us at one time or another, because he was so passionate). I am thankful for so many memories: being directed by him for class projects, sharing a suite with him our senior year, the Shaun Cassidy Fan Club, being his Gabriel sidekick when he played God in that show at Oswego, and post-college get-togethers as well. Plus, a nice collection of letters from when people used to write each other. I've attached a photo from Hershey Park - Jennifer and I went with Tim, when he came to visit, probably 1995. Tim always let his light shine and wasn't afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve, qualities I hope we can all emulate.

Timmy, my most cherished Timmy. Since the moment you came barreling into my life with your star lamp gift and ridiculous idea of being mute for our first meeting, you became an instant kindred spirit, and, later, after our time spent living in LA together, where you absolutely shined and told me many times recently that was “sheer bliss” for you, our time together there, you became one of my soulmates. Can we even count the hours we have spent talking about everything under the sun, and the whole kitchen sink, since then? I think it adds up to infinity. To be each other’s confidantes over this past decade has been my touchstone, my lifeline, by far one of the best parts of my life. To imagine life without you is…unimaginable. I still keep expecting you to call any minute now. You have been my Angel all this time, and I count on you being my Angel til the end of time. To say that have been loving is an understatement, you have been love personified for me.
Too many singular memories to recount here…but I will say thank goodness I just got to see you in person visiting me for 10 days at Cow Cloud Pelican. You have been my comfort, my joy, my champion, my laughter. You have held my hand through the scariest of moments, you have made my best moments even better. Also, to know that I gave YOU joy and love and a soft landing place all these years is just the most beautiful feeling in the world. My most precious friend, I feel you soaring now. You finally know what “consciousness” is. I cannot wait for you to show me. I will love you always.
To all the Mollens, Tim loved you all more you can ever know. What he wanted most for you was to find deep peace and joy in your hearts.
He was a “family” man and you were the most important. Anne was his beacon.
My deepest sympathies to you, and the multitude of friends who loved him.

To Tim's Mother, family, friends, and all those who knew and loved him. I never had the privilege to meet Tim. I did, however, have the pleasure to see him perform in several plays at the Cider Mill and he was hilarious. His humor traveled to the audience and back and made him a memorable character. I also remember reading his witty articles in the Press and Sun Bulletin. HIs style of writing, and the ways in which he was able to make his stories of his brothers and their hijinks when growing up come alive, brought me many a smile and laugh. He truly had a wonderful life and from all accounts made others' lives that much richer, for having lived his so fully.

I knew Tim through his writing, but to tell you the truth he is one of those people that we all feel like we know personally and was such an important part of the entire community. He may not have known that, but he was. If you read his obituary, that come out clear as a bell. Few of these type of people left here. A leader through his kind thoughts and words and using humor to deliver the message. His newspaper column was one for the ages. I still have a clipping of one about his own childbirth experience. It was hilarious and when I can, and I know someone about to give birth, I send it to them. A vessel for societal change. He will be missed.

Oh Tim, my amazing, generous, opinionated, hilarious friend. I don't even know where to begin. I still can't believe you're not with us anymore. It doesn't make any sense. But here we are. Meeting you my freshman year at Oswego left an indelible mark in the best way. I was always in awe of your talent and your dedication on stage (and off) to every role you played. You were truly an inspiration. I hope you knew that. Your commitment in every moment went to 11 and was something I always tried to emulate in my own performances. And let's not forget the fact that I could never, NEVER get through a scene with you without melting down in uncontrollable fits of the giggles. You truly were the funniest human I've ever met. I've seen so many friends mention that fact. Lately, we shared a passion for justice and what's right in this world and I know how disappointing and frustrating the last decade was for you. But I hope you knew how much joy you brought to the people around you. We're all going to miss you dearly. My deepest condolences to your family.

Tim Mollen was partly responsible for a big reason I had a great college experience. Tim founded the Shaun Cassidy Fan Club improv troupe/club at Oswego, a club where I met and so many other actors, improvisers, and comedians. Without Tim starting the Shaun Cassidy Fan Club, I wouldn’t have met and made lifelong friends, past, present, future roommates. For that, I’ll always be grateful.
The club was more than an extracurricular activity... It was a place of comfort, community, a 2nd family away from home. A show to look forward to every Saturday night. Every week we’d all put our hands together in a circle and chant “love, laughter, friendship, go!” Before we came out on stage. It was the perfect catchphrase for Shaun Cass, as we all loved the laughter and friendships made while we were a part of it. Tim came back for reunion shows and I was lucky enough to improvise with him on stage on several occasions.
A fond memory of mine with Tim is pictured here. 2022, I was out in LA visiting my sister and friends. I invited Tim along for some trivia. He was an absolute trivia wizard!! We were very proud to come in not last place!!
Gonna miss you, Tim. Thanks for the laughs and friendship.
May his memory be a blessing.
And as always “Love, laughter, friendship, go!”

We all know people who “light up the room”, which Tim did. However, he also cracked up the room. When my parents still lived in Binghamton, they would send newspaper clippings of Tim’s writings to me in Georgia and then we would laugh about it together on the phone. His way with words made for many great, hilarious discussions. Then, Tim’s books made their way around our family for many more laughs. I was especially proud to have a signed copy of one. He had a gift of making others cry tears of hilarious laughter. Dan, may you and your family smile and laugh as you remember Tim, especially during this difficult time. As a young person who loved theater I was always inspired by Tim’s work. A comedian on stage and off, he brought his heart to everything he did. He would have us in stitches as a bumbling inspector, an errant uncle or a shady character at the Cider Mill Playhouse. One of my fondest memories of Tim was him almost breaking character because one of his castmates was making him laugh, but he worked it into the scene beautifully.
Tim was larger than life in the Binghamton community and gave of himself to all of us with his weekly humor column, which often made its way to our fridge as a reminder to not take this life too seriously.
