Please share a memory of Hedwig to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Hedy M. Martin on Friday, July 25th, 2025 after a brief hospital stay. Born to Robert J. (Roy) and Hedwig A. Martin on April 29th, 1943 in Johnson City, NY, Hedy was lovingly raised in a family with her three brothers Bob, David and John where she learned the richness and importance of family, religion and Christian values. A proud and lifelong Binghamton native, Hedy graduated from Saint Patrick's Academy in 1961. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education from College Misericordia, Dallas, Pennsylvania in 1965. Upon graduation, Hedy began her teaching career in Woodbridge, New Jersey and then returned to teach in the Binghamton City School District at MacArthur School and West Junior Middle School from where she ultimately retired. Hedy was predeceased by her parents Robert J. Martin, Jr. and Hedwig A. Martin, brothers Robert J. Martin III (Nancy) and David P. Martin. She is survived by her brother John J. Martin, P.E. (Mary Ann) and sister-in-law Mary Ellen Martin. Also surviving are her beloved nieces and nephews: David P. Martin Jr., Catherine Gardiner, Susan Mielczarski, Robert J. Martin IV, Ann Martin, John J. Martin Jr. and Christine Capogna. She is also survived by nine grandnieces and grandnephews. Hedy enjoyed her life in the Binghamton area. Teaching Home Economics to so many students in the area brought her great joy and satisfaction. Her devotion to the Roman Catholic faith played a significant role in her life. She was a parishioner at Sts. Cyril & Methodius Church. She belonged to the Lay Carmelites and kept an enthronement of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in her home. She loved to travel with family and friends, particularly enjoying trips to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Martyrs in Auriesville, NY; the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe VT; the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes in Lourdes, France; several pilgrimages to the Sanctuary of Our Lady Queen of Peace in Medjugorje, Bosnia and Herzegovina; and to the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Hanceville, Alabama. A Funeral Mass will be offered at Ss. Cyril and Methodius Church, 148 Clinton Street, Binghamton, Monday August 4, 2025 at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Kostka Cemetery, Town of Maine. The family will receive friends at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main Street, Binghamton, Sunday August 3, 2025 from 1 to 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Association for Vision Rehabilitation and Employment, 174 Court Street, Binghamton, NY 13901.
