Obituary of Joan M. Hanahue

Joan M. Hanahue, 87, of Binghamton, NY passed away on March 9, 2025 after a long illness. She was born in Scranton, PA on June 14, 1937. She is survived by her three daughters, Kathleen and Thomas Burns, Conklin, NY, Eileen and Robert Pywell, Winter Springs, FL, and Maureen Hanahue, Apex, NC; and six sisters, Mary Lou Lombardo, Taylor, PA, Janet Pritchyk, Old Forge, PA, Linda Nese, Pittston, PA, Sandy Williams, Clark Summitt, PA, Lou Ann Nowell, Ransom Twp, PA, and Betsy Davis, Taylor, PA. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Thomas Hanahue, her parents, Joseph F. and Helen Sweeney Howath, her stepmother, Louise Oister Howath, brothers Joseph Jr. and James John and a sister, Susan. She had seven grandsons, Jeremy, Thomas, Nicholas, Connor, Cameron, Cody and Caleb, ten great-grandchildren, Mariah, Emily, Jackson, Abigail, Keegan, Kaylee, Jake, Chase, Alexis and Kyera; also several brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and caring friends. She graduated valedictorian of South Scranton Catholic High School, was employed in the directory office of the Bell Telephone Co. and was a long-time member of St. Paul's Church, Binghamton. She dedicated herself to her family, enjoyed camping, boating at Watkins Glen Yacht Club and wintering in Florida. Her attention to detail is renowned! Her brilliant mind enjoyed reading, listening to music and playing games with her children and grandchildren. The family wishes to thank the staff of Good Shepherd Fairview Home and Guthrie Lourdes Hospice for the wonderful care given to their mother. A Funeral Mass will be offered at St Paul's Church, Binghamton, Saturday, March 15th at 10am. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main Street, Binghamton, Friday, March 14th from 5-7pm.
