Obituary of Dr. John E. Harding

John E. Harding MD of Binghamton, NY died peacefully on February 12, 2025 at age 96. He was predeceased by his wife Sylvia in 1963, and his wife Marie in 2019, and by his brother Thomas (and sister-in-law June) and sister Joan (Hays). He is survived by his best friend and brother-in-law George Hays, and his eight children and their spouses: John (Patricia), Ann (Joseph Brady), Timothy, Patrick (Kristen), Christopher (Amy), Kathleen (Robert DeNight), Mark (Pamela), and David (Jodie), he is also survived by eighteen grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Jack's life was one of service to his many patients for over 50 years, as well as love for and enjoyment of his large immediate and extended family. A devout Catholic, he was an active parishioner at St. John's, St. Patrick's, and St. James. A native of Binghamton, he grew up in St. Mary's Parish, earned his diploma at St. Paul's High School, and graduated Manhattan College. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Marquette University School of Medicine (now the Medical College of Wisconsin). After medical internship in Buffalo, NY, John served in the United States Air Force for two years at March Air Force Base in California, and held the rank of Major when discharged from the Reserves in 1964. After completing residency in medicine at Wood VA Hospital in Milwaukee, he began a long association in medical practice with his great friend Dr James O'Brien, attending to patients at Binghamton General and Lourdes Hospitals, and later at Wilson Memorial. A long time member of the Broome County Medical Society, he helped introduce kidney dialysis service to Binghamton, and was involved in the establishment of the local clinical campus associated with SUNY Upstate Medical School. He was actively involved with the American Heart Association and Catholic Charities, helping to start golf outings for the benefit of both charities. Dr. Harding's family would like to thank the staff at Good Shepherd for their kind, patient and loving care during the last years of his life. A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Patrick's Church, corner of Oak and Leroy Streets, Binghamton on Saturday, February 22, 2025 at 10:30 AM. The family will receive friends between 9:00 and 10:15 AM at St. Patrick's Church. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Johnson City. Expressions of sympathy in Dr. Harding's memory may be made to American Heart Association. The Mass will be live streamed at www.sta-sp.org
