
Obituary of MaryEllen Giblin
MaryEllen (Hawley) Giblin 95 of Binghamton died peacefully Wednesday evening, January 29, 2025. She was predeceased by her husband, Byron (Barney) to whom she was married for 49 years. She was also predeceased by her parents, Elizabeth and James Hawley and her brothers Jim & Ed Hawley as well as her in-laws Kathryn and Lawrence Giblin, her sisters-in-law, Marion Hickey and Barbara Hawley and her brothers-in-law Joe Hickey and Monsignor Lawrence Giblin.
MaryEllen is survived by her children JoAnne Giblin (Ron Schiesser) Dan Giblin (and partner Claudia Hauser) and Marty (Laura) Giblin. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Colleen, Mike, Greg and Abby as well as several nieces, nephews & cousins.
She was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish. She was a 1946 graduate of Binghamton Central HS & Saint Mary's Nursing School of Rochester in 1949.
She was employed as a nurse at Lourdes Hospital and a traveling school nurse teacher at several small area schools and then at SV High School and BCC. She finished her career at Binghamton General Hospital as a Utilization Review Coordinator.
Her hobbies included a keen interest in the genealogy of the Giblin and Hawley families which she diligently worked on with her cousin Eddie Giblin.
She & Barney also loved traveling with Joe and Marion Hickey, Monsignor Giblin & their good friends Bob and Eleanor Rogan and Larry and Dot Croteau. They often took cruises, including on the ship QE2. They frequently traveled all over the US including Hawaii.
She and Barney also loved spending time at the family cottage on Quaker Lake. They spent every Sunday in the summer there with the Hickeys and Fr Gene and all of the family swimming, grilling and frequently making s'mores at the end of the evening campfire.
She was very loyal to her groups of friends and after retiring loved going out to lunch with coworkers from SV or from Binghamton General Hospital. She also kept in touch with her nursing school classmates and frequently attended reunions or get-togethers.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff on 2 North at Willow Point Nursing Home for their excellent care of MaryEllen over the last two years.
A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Highland Avenue, Binghamton, Saturday February 8, 2025 at 11 a.m. Burial will be in St. Augustine's Cemetery, Silver Lake, PA in the spring. The family will receive friends at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Saturday from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. The Mass will be live streamed at www.sta-sp.org
