Reverend Monsignor James D. Kane, a Retired Priest of the Diocese of Syracuse, died Friday evening May 20, 2016 at Wilson Memorial Hospital. Father Kane was born in Binghamton, NY on June 21, 1933. He is predeceased by his parents, John J. and Marie (McManus) Kane; brothers, Rev. Joseph F. Kane and Rev. John W. Kane; brother and sister in law, Robert A. and Betty Kane; sister and brother in law, Eleanor and Robert Taugher; and nephew, Kevin Taugher. He is survived by eleven nieces and nephews including Rev. Timothy Taugher, pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Church, Hillcrest and many great nieces and great nephews and a grandnephew. Father Kane was educated at St. Patrick's Academy, Binghamton, NY, St. Andrews Seminary and St. Bernard's Seminary, Rochester, N.Y. and Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. Father Kane was ordained to the priesthood on February 3, 1958 for the Diocese of Syracuse. He served in parishes as an associate pastor at St. John the Evangelist and St. Thomas Aquinas, Binghamton, NY. After advanced studies in Washington, D.C., he was appointed Assistant Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Syracuse, N.Y., and resided at Holy Family Parish, Fairmont, N.Y. On June 2, 1975, Father Kane was appointed pastor of Blessed Sacrament Church, Johnson City, N.Y. where he remained until his retirement September 4, 2003. Father Kane then resided at the McDevitt Home for Retired Priests in Binghamton, N.Y. Father Kane's body will be welcomed into St. Patrick's Church, corner of Oak and Leroy Streets, Binghamton Monday at 4 p.m, where he will Lie in State until 7 p.m. At 7 p.m. a Vigil Service for a Deceased Priest will commemorate his life. All are invited to attend. A con-celebrated Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Patrick's Church Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. by his fellow Priests and the Most Reverend Robert J. Cunningham D.D. Bishop of Syracuse and the Most Reverend Thomas J. Costello D.D. Auxiliary Bishop. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Johnson City following the Liturgy. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the McDevitt Home for Retired Priests, 68 Seminary Avenue, Binghamton, NY 13905.
